Look For Any Unclaimed Property In Your Name

I remember reading a story on the news about a college ring found by a German diver on the North African coast. The finder located the ring’s owner after contacting staff at the University of Notre Dame where the ring came from and it turns out she had lost the ring two decades ago! I asked myself what would a Notre Dame college ring be doing in an underwater cave in Mauritius? The answer came when I found out the owner’s previous job- turns out she used to be a CIA agent in the 80’s and was stationed in Africa during the time the ring was lost.

Sounds intriguing right? Getting reunited with lost keepsakes is always an exhilarating experience especially if you expect them to be gone for good. Well guess what? You might be able to find some right now for yourself or for a friend by doing an unclaimed property search online!

State Treasuries annually collect valuables like antiques and assorted jewelry and mementos from safe deposit boxes whose owners haven’t shown-up for a quite a few years. Money from these boxes and from old and inactive bank accounts, uncollected retirement benefits, salary checks and similar assets are also turned over to the Treasury as state unclaimedproperty.

Businesses and financial establishments are required by the National Unclaimed Property Law to surrender to the State any unclaimed property- money and financial assets that have been dormant for 3-5 years and whose owners can’t be located. Lack of a forwarding address or no next of kin are the major reasons for unclaimed property.

Only a small portion of the general public is aware about the possibility of finding unclaimed property online. This is why not enough people are doing a search and the Bureau of Unclaimed Property in all the States now hold on to a total of $33 BILLION according to experts. Different States have varying amounts. California unclaimed property is one of the biggest in the country at $5 billion and Texas unclaimed property worth around $2 billion. Unclaimed property in Florida is a little more than what the Lone Star has with a reported $3 billion owed to Sunshine State inhabitants.

Other states have a bit less but fact is, more people should really be checking for any unclaimed property that might be owed them- money, jewelry or precious memorabilia. Tangible items are sold-off by the government if unclaimed after a while, so it might be a good idea to learn how to do a proper search for unclaimed property ASAP.
